Here at CCR in Denver, our role is to match you to the concrete flooring that meets the needs of your commercial property. Rarely do we get calls specifically asking for polished concrete, but, during our conversations with callers, we often find that polished concrete is the choice that makes the most sense for their needs.
Polished concrete is renowned for its durability, aesthetic appeal, and low maintenance requirements, so it’s easy to see why people prefer this option. However, like any material, it has specific limitations that might make other forms of concrete more suitable under certain conditions.
When is Polished Concrete Not the Best Choice?
CCR offers a wide variety of commercial concrete flooring options, so we have plenty of choices if polished concrete is not right for you. Situations where this may occur include:
- High Moisture Environments – Polished concrete, while durable and resistant to moisture to some extent, is not the best option in areas where high humidity, frequent spills, or standing water are common. The smooth, glossy surface can become slippery when wet, posing a safety risk. In such environments, a broom-finished or textured concrete that offers better traction might be more suitable.
- Extreme Industrial Conditions – In facilities that handle heavy machinery, abrasive materials, or significant chemical exposure, the surface integrity of polished concrete may be compromised over time. Industrial settings with high impact activities might benefit more from a concrete floor with a protective coating or a more resilient surface treatment designed to withstand harsh conditions.
- Outdoor Areas – Polished concrete is generally not recommended for outdoor use due to its slipperiness when wet and potential to degrade under UV exposure. Outdoor concrete surfaces are better served by finishes that can handle the wear and tear of weather conditions, such as exposed aggregate or stamped concrete that offers texture and is less affected by environmental elements.
- Cost Constraints – Polishing concrete is a labor-intensive process that can be more expensive than other finishing methods. For projects with limited budgets, simpler treatments like stained or sealed concrete might provide a more cost-effective solution while still offering aesthetic versatility and adequate durability.
- Aesthetic Preferences – While polished concrete provides a sleek, modern look, it may not align with the design aesthetic of every space. In historic homes or buildings where a more natural or rustic appearance is desired, stained, stamped, or even untreated concrete could be more appropriate to maintain the character and style of the environment.
Every situation is different, which is why we discuss options with you carefully before we determine which choice is best. Sometimes, the best option is polished concrete, but many times it isn’t. As we discuss your needs, we’ll be better able to provide you with feedback.
Alternatives to Polished Concrete
Should we determine that polished concrete is not ideal, chances are we are going to recommend a different option instead, such as:
- Stained Concrete – Offers a variety of colors and finishes that can mimic natural stone or provide unique decorative effects. It is less expensive than polishing and can be used in both indoor and outdoor settings.
- Stamped Concrete – Ideal for adding patterns and textures that resemble brick, stone, or wood. This method is particularly suitable for outdoor areas like patios and walkways where additional grip is beneficial.
- Epoxy Coatings – These provide robust protection against moisture, chemicals, and physical impact, making them suitable for garages, industrial settings, and areas with heavy foot traffic.
- Textured Finishes – Concrete surfaces such as broom finishes provide better slip resistance and are simpler to execute, making them ideal for exterior walkways, driveways, and other areas where safety is a priority.
While polished concrete floors are an excellent choice for many applications due to their longevity and minimalistic beauty, they are not always the optimal solution. For more information, or to get started, please contact CCR, today.
